God's Moving.. So Are We!

When Was It Written
In late January 2007, Trace Crossing prepared to move its Sunday worship services from the Hancock Leadership Center on the ICC Campus to a new leased location in the West Main Shopping Center. There simply wasn't enough room at the college anymore for worship and children. This article communicates the excitement the church felt as it went from one location to the next.

God’s Moving… And So Are We
Moving wasn’t just a part of life for me growing up in an Air Force family. Moving was a way of life. My first move came when I was barely six months old; from New Jersey to California (by car I might add). We stayed in California for three years. Then the Mayflower moving vans came again. This time we crossed the country the other way headed for Georgia. We made this trip by car as well, peering over the edge of the Grand Canyon in Arizona and outracing a tornado in north Texas along the way. From Georgia we moved to southwest Texas, from southwest Texas to Washington D.C., and finally, from Washington, D.C. to Florida. Five moves in 14 years totaling well over 10,000 miles. See what I mean? Moving really was a way of life.

Since my family never really settled anywhere longer than 3 or 4 years, moving became a very natural part of life for me. Moving days came like clockwork. The weird thing though is this: I actually grew to enjoy it. I liked the adventure of moving from one place to the next. Moving meant days in a car (sometimes weeks) seeing things out my window I had never seen before. Moving meant a new environment. Moving meant new challenges. Moving meant new faces and new places. All of it energized me. So when moving day rolled around, I was ready with boxes packed and bags prepared for the big adventure.

And that brings us to today, moving day in the life of Trace Crossing. The fact that we’re packing up and heading out of the Hancock Leadership Center after barely 4 months here doesn’t really surprise me at all. Why? For one, I expected it. I have a hunch that moving is going to be a theme for us in these next few years. But it’s not just that I expected it – I’m actually going to enjoy it. I’m going to enjoy showing up on Saturday to setup one last time. I’m going to enjoy tearing down on Sunday evening one last time. Actually, I’m going to enjoy not showing up on Saturday and Sunday nights; I might actually get to watch a football game at home for a change!

But I think the thing I’m going to enjoy most is the very same thing I enjoyed when growing up. Because this move will mean seeing things we’ve never seen before. Moving will mean a new environment. Moving will mean new challenges. Moving will mean new faces in new places. This won’t be the last move we make as long as we keep growing. And, sure, some day we’ll build a permanent facility for worship and our children, but for now we’re nomads. So let’s enjoy it. And remember, we’re moving because God’s moving and I hope it never stops. See you next week on West Main!
